The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself

Michelle’s Raw Notes from the Blinkist Book Summary of The Untethered Soul:

Listen to your thoughts, but know that they don’t define you.

  • Your first step toward enlightenment is to start paying attention to your inner voice.

  • Your inner voice follows certain patterns and influences your emotions.

  • Your thoughts are just objects of your consciousness.

  • Your thoughts and feelings don’t define you. The real YOU is only aware of the role these thoughts and feelings play.

There's a well of energy deep inside you. Don’t block it, but learn to let it flow.

  • If you want to feel your inner energy (chi), you need to open your mind and let it flow - stop subconsciously blocking it.

  • You have to let negative emotions pass through you.

You can never lead a fear-free life - the only way to transcend fear is to let it go.

  • Fear is an object of your consciousness. You can either let it go or run from it (move around it, pretending it’s not there).

  • Enlightenment is not about eliminating fear - it’s about being aware of it and not letting it take over your life.

When you widen the focus of your consciousness, you transcend the confines of your personal self.

  • Are you trapped in your own self?

  • Are you imposing boundaries in your own mind to protect yourself?

  • When you let thoughts float on by, you transcend your personal self.

The idea of death helps us have more clarity and prioritize what’s important

  • Death gives life meaning.

  • Reflecting on death can make your relationships more meaningful.

  • How would you change your life knowing you’re going to die in a week? Why aren’t you doing those things now?

Find the balance between extremes - it’s an essential part of your spiritual awakening.

  • When you find your right path and stick to it, you’ll be more energized and your life will be simpler and clearer.
