How We Approach Our Habits as Women
It's a brand new year and talk of new habits is buzzing in the air.
There's so much advice out there about what it takes to make a habit stick, but you know what I've noticed? 99% of the time, that advice is coming from men and we really have to take that advice with a huge grain of salt because they simply aren't factoring in all the things that women need to factor in.
Women are nurturers. We are always taking care of someone else, especially if that "someone else" is our kids.
For that reason, much of the advice on habits never quite gels with us.
Such as...
"YOU GOTTA GET UP AT 5AM AND WORK OUT"
.... um, I got up 4,394 times last night with my newborn and I need to sleep.
"START YOUR DAY WITH THIS GREEN JUICE CONSISTING OF 23 DIFFERENT SUPER FOODS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR BODY."
... I have 5 minutes alone, where's the damn coffee?
I'm sort of joking, but there's a lot of guilt we carry when we just can't seem to stick to the habits of the super-successful and I'm happily over it.
Here's what I believe:
I'm a woman - I operate differently from the advice coming from men on so many levels.
I go with the flow of my energy. I wake up when I wake up - that could be 10am or 5am.
I don't need to practice habits THE way - only MY way. I tweak my habits as much as I please. When I was pregnant, I would take a walk nearly every day. Now I have a baby and it's cold outside so I almost never go outside. My 30 minutes of walking has turned into 10 minutes of jumping on a trampoline. For me, sticking to a healthy habit means giving myself permission to CHANGE it as much as I want.
Self-discipline only works when it's coming from a place of self-love. Without self-love, self-discipline dissolves into self-sabotage.
All that to say - I think you'll appreciate this week's episode of the Michelle and Aimee show in which we talk all about sticking to habits YOUR way instead of THE way.
